Especially for dorky hamsters

June 19th, 2009

What kinds of productive things do you do if you have a free afternoon? Gardening? Cleaning? Canning? A little woodworking, perhaps?

If you’re in Alaska, like eBay seller ak_drummer, apparently you scan your environs for things you can recycle in an unorthodox way, like this iMac hamster cage. Or a Nintendo GameCube that’s been converted into a hidden storage spot. Or components of something called a potato spud gun cannon.

If this helmet could talk…

…what would it say?

Ebay seller 4zerothero says that the paratrooper helmet he is selling belonged to one of three uncles that fought in World War II. Because he knows little about it, he “lets the pictures do the talking.” At least one of the images has something to say.

On Sundays, I juggle jet skis

September 7th, 2008

Ebay seller “krazykel2006″ seems to do a brisk business hawking Gothic fetishwear, like platform heels, patent leather stiletto ballet slippers and clothing that uses metal as though it were a natural fiber.  But in a new auction, she offers a twenty-foot tall robot sculpture that’s currently standing in the lake behind her house. Composed of metal, wood and rubber, he has ribs made out of tires and is holding a jet ski in one hand, a keg in the other.

Making this sounds like a pretty major endeavor to me, unless you have superhuman strength. But the seller’s only explanation is that her husband “was bored one day.”

Stormy waters for sale

August 25th, 2008

In my twenties, my student loans felt like a boot on my neck that kept me from traveling as much as I wanted to. My younger brother (who wisely chose a much less expensive public university education) didn’t have those constraints. He started collecting dirt from places he traveled, giving them to me in pretty glass bottles so that I could touch some of the parts of the earth that I hadn’t seen. It was a kind and lovely gesture. I still have them.

Apparently, someone believes that those of us who don’t get to feel the brunt of natural disasters somehow feel left out, like a roving weatherman who’s been forced into retirement. And so they’ve collected a mason jar of water from Hurricane Fay, even offering a tree limb or a gallon of extra flood waters to sweeten the deal. There’s also the thoughtful reminder that the water isn’t for drinking.

What would the motivation to buy this be? To be a part of an historic flood? To contain a wrathful element peacefully in a jar?
